i absolutely set people up to infodump at me, itās one of my absolute favourite ways to learn things! you mean i get to LEARN NEW STUFF from a FRIEND who is INCANDESCENT OVER SHARING? sign me up FOREVER.
Iām a goldsmith and hand engraver and got told we have a client who wants a particular themed signet ring with a bonkers high budget and that I should come up with some designs for it. In describing what he said he wanted the manager said āhe said it was his special interestā and immediately I was like āI need to meet him. I can research and design this for months and months or I can listen to him for 30 minutes and take notes, which do you want?ā
Can someone tell men who write about young girls who are smart that most of not all of them also like dolls. And the shorthand of the little girl rejecting dolls to show how cool and smart they are is lazy, trite, and boring.
Iām actually begging men to never write about girls and dolls ever again. Please I canNOT stand this stupidity one more time.
Iām willing to bet that every smart woman played with and loved dolls at some point. The narrative plotline of little girls rejecting dolls is 100% a misogynistic trope that upholds the idea that girly things are lesser. That being smart requires rejecting feminity.
Dolls rock. Everyone should play with dolls.
Reading a lot of the responses to this post just makes it glaringly clear that cis men just have no fucking clue how dolls are played with by little ones.
It wasnāt just āIām so prettyā and boyfriends. Thereās a reason barbie had 4 billion jobs. My dolls all had names, friends, enemies, loves and losses, and complex story lines punctuated by a few outfit changes. They were secret agents, superheros, vets, war heroes, smart, adventurous, and everything inbetween.
Talk to a little one about the misadventures of their toys and youāll learn more about that kiddoās brain than if you look at their math homework.
Creativity is inherently tired to intelligence. The smarter that little girl, the more complex and interesting her little doll world becomes.
So anyway, cis men arenāt allowed to write about little girls unless they learn how to behave.
Okay Iām sorry these tags are too much
Actually if youāre having a bad day read the tags because i seriously cannot pick a favorite.
iām an american girl doll collector and once i dragged my rather snobbish friend shopping at american girl place and she went around with her nose in the air saying ādonāt you think itās a little insidious how theyāre training little girls to be mommies and take care of babies?āĀ like no, thatās why american girl popularized the companion doll, a doll who was neither an adult role model nor a baby to practice mothering but a friend of a similar age to the child playing with it, just right for sharing adventures.Ā besides which, samantha championed labor rights and child welfare, caroline almost single-handedly fought the war of 1812, addy liberated herself from slavery, and cecile is a national treasure.Ā and when i played with my childhood felicity, we didnāt play house and i didnāt take care of her.Ā we were shapeshifters who belonged to a secret ancient brotherhood and we went on missions of ecological preservation and corporate spying and i would tie her to my back with a shawl and go running around in the woods.
I mean, okay, I mothered my American Girl doll, but I did things like bandaging the injuries she sustained while we were battling the forces of evil.
(My bratz, meanwhile, were in a long-running soap opera. Meygan and Jade in particular had a very elaborate and sprawling love story that spanned literal years of Shakespearean Hijinks.)
Iām old (56 as of writing this in 2021). I played with dolls. I STILL play with dolls (aka The Sims). My dolls hunted giants. Sometimes my dolls FELL to giants (aka me). They went on wild adventures and sometimes they taught school. They opened restaurants. They were pirates. The stories I played out with my dolls were full of imagination, and yeah sometimes that included playing house with them.
You do raise a really good point that I feel this post almost says the oppositeā¦but thereās not really anything wrong with the traditional way that dolls get played with either. I mean if they go to school and have friends and boyfriends and make cookiesā¦.itās still not a bad thing. Playing with dolls, any kind really, helps children process adult life through recreating the world around them.Ā
Likeā¦even if that smart little girl just made cookies for her dolls and had tea parties, itās still not bad to like dolls.Ā
Kids play with dolls in the same way that people play The Sims. Plain pretty outfits and tea parties are rare; they quickly give way to multiple doll family drama, creative doll executions, and one or more dolls being superheroes, vampires and/or summoning death or Satan.
doing my damnedest to free myself of the “just gotta get through this week” “only x more days til the weekend” mindset & learn to appreciate each day for whatever it is lest i be driven to madness
so what if tomorrows monday i have leftovers & maybe this week i will make soup. maybe ill see a cat. maybe each day will show me something worthwhile even if im tired & maybe i can enjoy it
